Volkswagen Golf GTI 40th anniversary: 500 units for Canada

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. The German manufacturer has created a special edition to mark the occasion and it is now arriving in dealerships. However, if you are interested in the car, it is recommended that you act quickly, as production is limited to 500 units for Canada.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a very popular car in the country and this is evidenced by the fact that we have been allocated 500 units. In comparison, the German manufacturer has decided to offer only 1,500 allocations for the United States market, which is approximately 10 times larger than ours.

Important Dates

The Volkswagen Golf was first introduced in 1974 and quickly established itself as one of the most popular cars worldwide. Today, in 2023, sales of the model exceed 35.5 million units, making it one of the top 10 best-selling vehicles of all time.

The version of the Golf that interests us was launched in Europe in 1976, but it wasn't until 6 years later that it arrived on the North American market in the form of the Rabbit GTI. At the time, the small sports car from the German manufacturer was powered by a 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 112 horsepower. By comparison, the 2023 Golf GTI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. While the modern car is much heavier, it remains very agile and fast.

A Matter of Subtlety

Volkswagen has always been known for the understated and sophisticated nature of its sports cars. The Volkswagen Golf GTI 40th anniversary edition is no exception. Even though it is a special edition, it distinguishes itself from the regular GTI version thanks to certain details such as its 19-inch glossy black wheels. Finally, purists will tell you that Volkswagen showed a lot of boldness and extravagance by adding a linear decal with hexagonal shapes and the number 40 on the bottom of the doors.

There is also a 40 logo on the steering wheel and retro-looking seats with checkered patterns inside the car.

The Golf GTI 40th anniversary edition is offered in 4 colors: Pomelo Yellow, Tornado Red, Urano Grey, and Oryx White, and some of these shades are even exclusive to this version.

Although we have been allocated 500 units, it is highly likely that the Golf GTI 40th anniversary edition will sell like hotcakes. If you are interested in the German manufacturer's car, note that it is available starting at $39,259 with the 6-speed manual gearbox and $40,659 with the 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
